Lecture summary
In 2024, Ohkojima Maki (Ohkojima Maki + Tsuji Yosuke) stayed in Mexico for about a year. As is well known, the history of “Mexico” began with the conquest by the Spanish Empire in the 16th century. Today, the largest majority in Mexico, the mestizo, refers to a mix of the invading Spaniards and the invaded indigenous people. The contradiction at the origin of Mexico’s roots, that of being both perpetrator and victim at the same time, this rift, is most symbolic of the various Virgin Mary statues found throughout Mexico. In this lecture, we will consider the relationship between art and “prayer” from the history of Mexican religious art, including Virgin Mary.
